5 Days till a New Years Revolution - Day 2

If our goals are bold & aspirational enough we will usually experience some kind of fear related to the goal.

That feeling of dread in the stomach or the rush of adrenalin in the head as we begin to overthink all of the reasons why it or we might fail.

They feel like terror yet as Tony Robbins says ‘they are happening for you not to you’ There are 2 things happening here ….

  1. The fear; evidence the goal is too big? You’re not going to succeed?

NO! Your fear is a message from your subconscious mind. Reacting would mean retreating. Responding on the other hand means decoding the message. New Years Revolutions are about welcoming the fear and exploring it to find the signpost for the best self growth

  2. The rationalising;

We spend 95% of our time operating from the conscious brain which I like to call the risk assessment centre. Always analysing for risk of failure, shame or being hurt the conscious brain will give compelling reasons as to why we need to avoid risk.

When fear tells us the goal is too scary we may rationalise an alternative, an avoidance or even a self sabotage. To revolutionise this experience of fear, we must allow the subconscious to join the discussion.

The best way to do this is with curiosity - the language of the subconscious mind.

Take 5 minutes of quiet time to engage, embrace & explore the fear of your goal.

Simply picture the goal being achieved & allow your feelings to surface.

Picture yourself in the new year working toward the goal.

Perhaps you could imagine somebody asking you about your goal or giving an opinion about it.

We are going to ‘Dive into the fears’ as Jay Shetty writes in Think like a Monk.

Ask yourself the following questions…

  1. Where do I feel the fear or hesitation on my body? Allow the fear to express itself

  2. What am I really afraid of? Jay Shetty advises to repeatedly ask this question as the answers are layered. Stay with it

  • Perhaps you will find the answers such as I’m afraid of failure, I am not good enough or people may judge me

  • Perhaps you may feel blocked or frustrated, this is your conscious brain trying to prevent the vulnerability to fear, keep going

  1. If the fear had a message what is it?

  2. The critical thing I say to myself about this goal is…. Eg it will never work, there’s no point Im not good/ strong/ disciplined enough

  3. The fear underneath the critical voice is… the critical voice can lead us directly to the cause eg Im not good enough.

  4. The self limiting belief we find under the fear is the programming that is limiting our success. We all have self limiting beliefs. If you found one - you have found the very place to self develop and help you achieve your goal.

  5. Close your eyes and ask yourself, who would I be without this belief? What would I like to believe instead?

Your roadblocks & triggers signpost to your greatest growth - embrace & explore them!

Knowing that your mind has only good intentions for you, there is no need to fight, blame or push against these functions. Simply get curious & focus on what you would like to believe instead, who you would be and also the actions you would take without the fear.

So, what did you find underneath the fear reaction and how could it be limiting your success?

How could it be signalling you to self-grow?
